The Sigillum Dei Ameth

The Sigillum Dei Aemaeth or 'Seal of God's Truth' (sigil- seal, Dei- God, as in deity, Emeth- AMTh Hebrew for truth) is a pictorial seal given to Dee and Kelley by the Angel Michael in an early seance held on the 14th of March 1582. This seal was simply shown then taken away. Dee then formed many different versions of it, but it was later fully dictated somewhere between March15 and March 20 (diary notes of the dictation lack dates, but are nestles between entries marked March 15 and March 20). This seal was then to be used in all seances in the form of wax replicas placed under each of the legs of the table (in smaller versions) and under the shewstone. The letters, numbers and symbols were all eventually dictated individually, while the pictorial form was given in a much broader form.

The dictation begins with the outer ring. It is circular and firstly split into quarters, then each quarter is split into 10 pieces, to form 8 sets of 5 pieces, 40 in total- a truly odd combination, since the whole of the Enochian System is based on around the number 7. Each of these sections is then filled with either letter(s) or a number and a letter, dictated from the top (just to the right) in a clockwise fashion. The numbers associated with the letters indicated how many spaces laid between the current letter and the next. If the number was on top, the next letter was that many spaces to the right (clockwise), and if it were on the bottom, to the left (anti-clockwise). By beginning at the capitals, and working to the letters without numbers, seven names of God are formed. (Take note, what looks like a W at the top, to the left, is a lower case Greek Omega, and some or one of the A's is regarded as a Greek Capital Alpha) These names are (in the order given by the angel Michael in a checking seance): Gal(a)as; Gethog; Th(A)aoth; Horlw n; Innon; (A)aoth; Galethog. The names are to be pronounced without the doubling of the a's. Great detail is gone into during the seance regarding the 42 letter names of God which Dee had studied in his Kabbalism, since this forms a 40 or 43 letter name, without or with these a's. The angel replied that with the a's restored it created a 42 letter name of god, although by any stretch of the system, a 42 letter name cannot be made.

Strangely enough, when Dee first tried to form these names, he was incorrect, and needed to be corrected by Michael- a far too simple slip for such a cryptographer/ mathematician. Also, the space containing og had been dictated go, and also needed to be corrected. However, the letters left over after the previous letters have been removed were not revisited. If we view them in the same light as the others and work the system again, we can find another 7 letter name (probably not a 7 letter name of God)- borymon. This does take into account two assumptions: b may actually be B, it being the start of the series if traced back, although this may not need to be done; and 13/r (bottom, 2 to the right) is in fact 3/r, making the series fluent and self-reliant. It is this last assumption which holds it together. One must question whether such a mistake would have been allowed by the angels at that stage, or any later stage, with this type of thing being regarded as an exacting science.

Between this and the next heptagon are 7 symbols, one in each space, along with numbers in all but one. These, by looking at them as letters, read anti-clockwise from the left of the top, read GALETHOG, as in the name of God from the outer ring. The numbers refer to the letters associated with the numbers from the outer ring, i.e. the 5 next to the G, is the number of the G in the outer ring at about the 10 o'clock position. The rest of the numbers are the same, and they all follow the sequence of the original outer ring name i.e. 5 clockwise, 24 anti-clockwise etc.

Inside the heptagon are the seven lines of Table I (20 Mar 1582) written one line per side. These lines when reformed in a table and read form commonly known angel's names.

Inside that heptagon are the seven lines of Table II (21 Mar 1582) written one line per space. These lines when reformed in a table and read form the seven angel's names which appear again in the centre of the seal, around the pentacle.

In and around the septacle (7 pointed star) and inner heptagon are the names of the 7 women, men, wenches and boys, formed from Table II.

As stated before, the inner pentacle contains the angelic names derived from Table II, with the exception of Zabathiel, which should be spelled Sabathiel. The Letters within the points of the pentacle- Z M S N C, are said to be the initial letters of a Hebrew sentence, in the manner of the Kabbalist's notaricon.

As noted, the angelic names contained herein are of no great revelation to the people of Dee's time. In fact, most of the names are contained in Agrippa or d'Abano's works. This was noted by Dee in a marginal note.
