Latin Alphabet -> Hebrew Alphabet

If this topic should be the 33rd iteration of the same old, same old, I apologize in advance- I tried the search function, but in vain.
Following questions: When transcribing words from the Latin alphabet to the Hebrew alphabet, are there any guidelines to the usage of zayin/samech/shin regarding "s"-sounds and the general usage of aleph/ayin (apart from the obvious ones like the angelic -AL)?
I googled for hours and found nonconclusive advice, and I would like to hear the QBLH-savvy folks' opinion.
IF, on the other hand, you would like to shut me up with a book-recommendation, please be my honored guest.
