Looking for ideas

Pretend for a moment that you're in a position where a lot of money has become involved in a relationship between you and another person. Let's also pretend that the other person involved in this now sees nothing but dollar signs, and you're looking at a situation where lies are being spread to all your mutual friends (with attempts to get the press involved), lawsuits are threatened but never initiated, etc.
Basically you're being unjustly attacked because of greed.
Additional information: a binding has been performed to stop the slander and that appears to have worked. There is also the strong likelihood that the person in question is undiagnosed bipolar but is currently quite manic.
I'm completely unfamiliar with the way you might choose to pursue this kind of a problem. What ways can magic be used to help the issue out? Without begging for spells, are there any past experiences you'd choose to share?
Are there any ways you would choose to NOT employ magic in such a situation? Why not?
