I think a good thing the stories do is get your mentality larger than your own needs or your own success. This is a VERY healthy, and even reinforcing perspective for magicians.
Most angels will not assist you if you have such a narrow view as isolated concern for your own needs and wants. You have to be bigger picture for most angels to care. While demons tend to see if they can work you into their own plans, but some REALLY start to respect you if you are the real deal, and may be redeemed by your example.
and a demon redeemed does warrant a reward, usually from the Angel who was in its commandrie.
