working with Oshun

HI.
I decided do do some work with Santeria orisha Oshun.To make a petition to be more precise.I did some research and I gathered the materials for the altar.I also read the posts about these kind of spirits.
My question is:petition requires initiation also?
I also read that if u wanna contact the Santeria spirits first u need to contact Eleggua which is like a road opener.
I apologize for my newbie questions but this section is totally new for me.I know these are powerful spirits and I don't wanna turn them against me..
