Initiation into Hermetics

Hi
I am very new to all this and am looking for a progressive course to study along with.
I have been looking through this forum and all the intersting info and keep seeing that with most people here Initiation into Hermetics is highly praised as a course of study.
I ordered a copy and am reading it but to be honest dont understand much and am finding the exercises difficult to understand.
My question is why is this book so highly rated and is it a good start for beginners or would something else be more appropriate.
