Bardon: Beeswax and Loam

Ok, so I went ahead and followed Bardon's instructions for creating the beeswax doll in Step VII
... as it turns out, beeswax and clay don't mix to well.
Has anyone actually tried this? Am I missing something? I ended up with a clump clay that just falls apart.
