Starting IIH - I have some doubts about Magick

Hello!
I started my journey a week ago, I'm doing the first step and I'm loving the results so far. I've been reading a lot about the subject and I'm kinda confused. Some of these doubts are lowering my motivation.
1) Why some people appear not to be very positive about Bardon's work?
2) Is it appropriate and viable to advance magically by yourself? Without a guru or an order?
3) Can we say Hermeticism is a magic system? Is there any other traditions I should look after?
4) Besides IIH, what would you suggest as a good read?
