sefer yetzirah?

Hi,
Do any of you here recommend study of the Sefer Yetzirah to assist with learning qabalah? Do you feel it has value for the western magician? Perhaps later in training?
I had the opportunity to look at the book (Kaplan) at Borders last night, and it's very intriguing. Not to mention overwhelming on the surface! I know a little bit about the book, and I've seen it recommended on occasion. I'm curious what the knowledgeable folks on this forum think of the book, and its practical value.
For reference, I'm a beginner with qabalah (or is kaballah the preferred spelling in these parts?
). I've been exposed to it for years, but something about it has always been off-putting for me. I've decided it's time to move beyond that and get a-learnin''.
